Sunrise by Anna Harley

All my pictures are of trees, or branches, so I think I must have been a tree spirit in a past life. While the work I make is rooted within the Landscape tradition, the fabric textures in my prints are an echo of my Scandinavian Arts and Crafts background and nomadic childhood. I now live with my family at the foothills of the Mendips, just South of Bristol and divide my time between my studio at home and Spike Print Studio in Bristol.

Gail tends to work mainly in screenprint, producing work ranging from large expressive painterly abstract monoprints, to smaller flat colour edition work and most recently monochrome portraits. The positive impact of colour has been her main inspiration together with the idea of journeys both literal and metaphorical.

Lure from Lair.simon tozer.low res

I make pictures of animals, particularly bears. I have always been intrigued by the inscrutability of animals. Their lack of speech means they communicate using other means. In my work I try to show emotional states. Sometimes there is a narrative element, and the picture holds a question as to what is happening or is about to happen. Humour has been defined as the collision of two opposing frames of reference, and I try to incorporate the tension suggested by this in my work.
